No cracks or chunks missing from base.The variety of scuffs and wear marks are consistant with age and in my opinion only add character. ![]() The white spots you see on some of the letters is where the varnish/laquer finish has been scuffed off. (one letter shows evidence of being glued back together in the past but you have to really look to see it). There are no missing chunks and no missing letters. The back is natural, unvarnished wood Condition is amazingly good considering the age and the fact it was meant to be used by children. I suspect that the original colors were more of a yellow and true red and that the varnish coating has darkened them with age. The front is an orangey gold color with neat curvy graphics in red. The board is very sturdy and measures about 13 1/2 by 9 1/4 inches by about 3/4 inch thick. Indeed, this piece has all 56 wood letter tiles which side in tracks and then over a thin metal rod to form words in the central track. This particular piece has belonged to my Milwaukee family since it’s manufacture An early Sears Catalog describes this toy as The Universal Spelling Board with 56 letters. Interestingly, Alonzo F Smith (who patented this item in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) described his primary intent for this item would an educational toy to 'amuse and instruct children', but also to serve as an ' advertising board on which to spell out words or sentences'. Guaranteed authentic with family provenance. It is marked "Pat Feb 16, ‘86" (patent number is 336,266). Offered is an antique wooden spelling board in really great and Complete condition.
